G1 to G2: Understanding Ontario's Wait Times

One of the most common questions new drivers ask: how long do I actually have to wait?

Standard timeline

Without any driver's education course, you must hold your G1 for 12 months before you're eligible to book a G2 road test.

With an approved driver's education course

If you complete a course from a Ministry-approved driving school, that minimum drops to 8 months. Keep your completion certificate — you'll need it when booking your G2 test.

What the G2 test covers

The G2 road test evaluates real driving skills: lane changes, turns, parking, highway merging, and following traffic laws in live conditions. Unlike the G1 knowledge test, this one is entirely practical.

After G2

Once you pass your G2 road test, most of the G1 restrictions lift, though you're still a novice driver until you pass your final G road test (minimum 12 months after G2, or 24 months if you skip driver's ed at the G1 stage). The zero blood alcohol requirement stays in place until you hold a full G licence.
