Your G1 Checklist

Follow these steps in order to get your G1 licence in Ontario without surprises.

  1. 1Confirm eligibility

    • You are at least 16 years old
    • You are an Ontario resident
  2. 2Gather your documents

    • Primary ID with legal name and date of birth (e.g., birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card)
    • Secondary ID if needed
    • Payment for the licensing fee
  3. 3Book your test

    • Book online via ServiceOntario or visit a DriveTest centre in person
    • Choose a location and time that works for you
  4. 4Study

    • Read the official Ontario Driver's Handbook
    • Review our free guides
    • Try our free sample practice test
  5. 5Test day

    • Arrive at least 15 minutes early
    • Bring your documents and payment
    • Complete the vision screening
    • Pass both sections (rules of the road, road signs) with 80%+
  6. 6After you pass

    • Your G1 licence is issued the same day
    • Review your G1 driving conditions and restrictions
    • Start your G1-to-G2 waiting period clock (12 months, or 8 with driver's ed)
