Eligibility & Documents

Turn 16 years old

You must be at least 16 years old and an Ontario resident on the day you take your test.

Gather accepted identification

DriveTest has strict rules on what ID is accepted.

You need original, valid identification proving your legal name, date of birth, and signature. Bring one of these:

If your ID doesn't include a signature, bring a second piece of ID that does.

Photocopies or photos on your phone will not be accepted.

Prepare $159.75 CAD for fees

Covers the knowledge test, your first G2 road test, and your 5-year licence. Book online via ServiceOntario or pay at the DriveTest centre.

Learn the road signs

You'll face 20 multiple-choice questions on recognizing signs by shape and colour.

Learn the rules of the road

Focus on right-of-way, demerit points, and your G1 driving conditions.

Score 80%+ on a practice test

Don't risk the $16.00 retake fee -- prove you're ready first.

Bring glasses or contact lenses

You must pass a basic vision screening before taking the written test.

Arrange a ride home

Even if you pass, a G1 licence requires a qualified supervisor in the car -- you can't drive yourself home alone.

Arrive 15 minutes early

DriveTest centres can be busy. Arriving early helps keep your appointment on schedule.
