The Full G Road Test: What Examiners Actually Check

The full G road test is your last step to an unrestricted licence, and it's longer and more demanding than the G2 test for one big reason: it adds highway driving.

What the test actually looks like

Like the G2 test, an examiner rides along and gives you directions in real traffic — but the route is longer, typically 30 to 45 minutes, because it has to include a stretch of highway driving in addition to the same city-street skills tested at G2.

What's new compared to G2

The highway portion is where most of the added difficulty lives. Examiners are watching for:

  • Smooth, confident merging that matches highway traffic speed before you join
  • Maintaining a steady highway speed rather than drifting below the flow of traffic
  • Full mirror and shoulder checks before every highway lane change
  • A safe following distance — at least 3 seconds — at highway speed
  • Using the deceleration lane properly when exiting

Driving noticeably below the speed limit on the highway is treated as a fault, not a safe choice — examiners are looking for confident control, not extra caution that disrupts traffic flow.

The city-driving standard is also higher

Beyond the highway component, examiners hold you to a slightly higher bar on the same skills tested at G2: smoother navigation through complex intersections, sound right-of-way judgment in ambiguous situations, and consistent scanning and mirror use throughout the drive, not just at obvious decision points.

Booking and fees

You can book your G road test once you've held your G2 for the required minimum — 12 months, or 24 months if you skipped an approved driver's ed course at the G1 stage. Book through DriveTest.ca; fees are set by the province and change periodically, so confirm the current amount on ontario.ca before booking. As with the G2 test, bring your G2 licence and a vehicle that's insured, plated, and mechanically sound.

After you pass

Passing the G road test lifts your remaining novice-driver restrictions and gives you a full, unrestricted Ontario licence — though the zero blood alcohol requirement for drivers under 22 continues to apply regardless of licence class.
